Akame Ga Kill! – Episode 8 Review – “Kill The Three (Part Two)”

Last Episode:

Esdeath’s Team The Three Beasts murdered officials and framed Night Raid. Bulat and Tatsumi met the Beasts in battle while protecting an official who is against the work of Onest. Two of the Three Beasts, Nyau and General Liver, remain to be taken out. Liver could be formidable for Bulat as he is a figure from his past…

This Episode:

General Liver
General Liver

Using Incursio, Bulat takes on Liver’s own Imperial Arms that manipulates water and other liquids. The two fight until they have both exhausted the power of their Arms and decide to settle it with swords. Bulat is able to kill Liver, but not before his former General can poison him with blood. It’s now down to an dying Bulat and a defenseless Tatsumi against Nyau. You’ll have to watch the episode to see how it ends. XP Also, Akame’s sister Kurome is coming back to town.

Thoughts:

Now that my favorite character is out of the picture, the show is lessened for me. I mean I know it was obvious that he wasn’t going to be around for long, but it’s still disappointing to see him offed so early. His death felt a lot more significant than Sheele’s did in light of what he hands down to Tatsumi. I guess it wasn’t a coincidence he was voiced by the same guy who did Kamina from Gurren Lagaan eh? Other than that I do not have much else to say about Bulat’s untimely end. We barely knew much else about him. But that’s what you get when you wait until the episode before they die to give a character a backstory.

The threat of the Three Beasts felt largely wasted. One fell in one hit, and the other two bit the dust after fairly quick struggles. Once Tatsumi got his power up, Nyau become just an afterthought. The whole backstory between Liver and Bulat felt like a throwaway since neither of them will be doing anything more in the series.

Despite these complaints, the battle this episode was damn fun. It was a fitting way for Bulat to go, fighting like a badass until the end. At least we have Tatsumi’s Teigu to remember Bulat from in the coming episodes. Speaking of those, we’ll get acquainted with Akame’s sister Kurome. She’ll probably just turn out to be another psycho *shrugs*. What can you do?
